Dame Dash & Associates Accused Of Selling Liquor Without A License!

The city of New York has issued a restraining order against Dame Dash’s art gallery DD172, for allegedly selling liquor without a license.

Dame Dash opened the DD172 gallery in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York in the fall of 2009.

The four-story building housed an art gallery; a photography and recording studio, and rehearsal and performance space for a number of indie bands.

According to the Village Voice, Dame Dash and his associates are accused of six counts of storing and selling alcoholic beverages without a license.

Investigators found workers at the DD172 gallery selling liquor without a license several times, with one violation occurring as recently as May.

The city has also labeled the DD172 gallery a “nuisance,” and believes it could be a “front” for an illegal club.

According to The Voice, Damon Dash and associates had vacated the DD172 premises in June.

The news comes on the heels of last month’s revelation that Damon Dash owes almost $2,000,000 in back taxes to the IRS.

Damon Dash is expected to appear in court on September 14th to answer the six charges of selling alcoholic beverages without a license.

Dame Dash Speaks On The Day He Lost Jay

NyMag.Com: In Esquire’s upcoming “People Who Matter” issue, writer Lisa Taddeo investigates Jay-Z’s cross-market appeal. She lets a few ho-hum theories fly — apparently, Jay-Z is successful because he is both a “gangster from the hood” and a “CEO in the boardroom” — and doesn’t get much access*, but the stuff about Steve Stoute and Jay-Z’s advice for Johnson & Johnson (“Baby oil, Jay suggested, should be marketed for its other uses, to remove makeup or to mix with suntan lotion so it glides on smoother”) is pretty great. Our favorite bit, though, came courtesy of Damon Dash. Unsurprisingly, Jay’s former bestie was available for interviews, and he provides the following anecdote about “the day he knew he’d lost Jay-Z.”

“It was me and Jay and the two Russians voting on every [Rocawear] decision, and I controlled the vote, because I always had Jay’s vote.” The two Russians were Alex Bize and Norton Cher, old-school clothing slingers from Manhattan’s garment district who ran the day-to-day operations. “But one day,” Dash says, “they brought me to a hotel … I said, ‘Why are we meeting at a hotel?’ and it was because they didn’t want anyone to hear me yelling. That was the day they told me they didn’t want [celebrity photographer] Mario Testino to shoot the ads.” Instead, they were going with someone cheaper, and they were going in a different direction altogether. “Here the Russians were telling me how to cater to my people! I wanted [Rocawear] to be sold at Bergdorf Goodman’s, not Dr. Jay’s!”

So there you go: Jay-Z and Damon Dash aren’t friends anymore because Jay-Z is cheap.

Jay-Z ‘Thanks’ Dame Dash For Rocawear

“We really should have done some Rihanna Rocawear umbrellas when that song became a hit.  We could have made a load of money on those.  I’m still kicking myself.”

For all of the chaos that was left in the wake of the Roc-A-Fella break up, there is still some positivity that can be found if a person searches through the rubble of the Dynasty.

Aside from being business partners in their musical venture, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Damon Dash also decided to take a crack at the fashion industry.  A true hustler knows that various paychecks becomes much more beneficial than a single check so the two needed to find a means to use their exposure to broaden their brand.

Officially launched in 1999, the line has developed clothing for adults and children and has expanded by creating handbags, jewelry and even sunglasses.

Unfortunately the break up found Dash selling his stake in the enterprise to Jay for $20 million.  Jigga would later sell his own rights in March 2007 to Iconix Brand Group for $204 million.  Jay, however, was still given the ability to oversee the marketing, licensing and product development.

As Jay caught up with Women’s Wear Daily, Mr. Carter actually gave his former business partner his due for his work with the clothing line.  He also added how their different mentalities in business were a reason behind the rift.

“Dame did a great job when he was here.  I just feel that I have a different way of running things, which I think is working out well. I let people make mistakes, and push them to be creative. I let a design team design. When they feel good about something they have created, it makes them want to do more. It makes them want to do their best. People are happy here. I’m not a controlling manager and I have a great team that makes me confident that things can run well when I’m on the road, and I’m proud of that.”

Jay also expressed how the brand has been absorbed by the community and established itself within the marketplace.

“Rocawear has always been a part of the whole overall culture.  It’s connected to everything that I do.  So, coming in full time was important to me.  It’s something I really believe in and something I want to protect.”

Always known to be a trendsetter, Hov explained how the actual idea of the brand was sparked back in 1997 while the rapper was on stage.

“I would be onstage performing, and I noticed that all the kids were wearing iceberg jeans.  The same jeans that I would wear.  So, we thought, ‘Why should we let Iceberg get all this business when we can do it ourselves?”

Acting as a catalyst to having young African-American males ditching sports jerseys and throwing on button ups, Rocawear was able to hit the fashion industry by storm.  As FUBU was, the new brand from Jay and Dame was fully embraced by the urban community.

Estimates show that Rocawear has annual sales of $800 million.  In March 2009, reports stated that the brand launched its first social networking site which offers things such as style news, music and fashion.

Dame Dash Reflects On Roc-A-Fella’s History….

“I was like everybody’s manager.  I guess on that respect, I might have spoiled them.”

The worst part about building an enterprise is when trouble begins to brew and a person is forced to just sit back and watch as everything they built and worked for, crumbles in front of them.  The feeling is magnified when a person comes to the realization that they can’t do anything about it.

With the news of the rift between Beanie Sigel and Jay-Z, it’s sad to see where they all came in and now look at what everything has become.  The legacy of Roc-A-Fella and everything that it stood for was shattered and surprising information is showing that  all these alleged friendships may have just been business deals in the end.

Dame Dash has caught the blunt trauma as he has been labeled the reason behind the Dynasty falling after bringing in the Diplomats which fueled beef between Cam and Jay.

Speaking with Mixtape Monster, Dame looks back on the past and how he was willing to sign anybody that could help in keeping the empire growing.

“In Rock-N-Roll, you don’t sign an artist until they can fill up a venue and sell merch and they sell their own CDs…then they get signed.  With Roc-A-Fella, I would just sign people, put them on a private jet and they’d be performing in front of the Garden.  I guess you think that’s normal, but it just wasn’t.”

Who would have thought that there would come a day when the Roc was a figment in everyone’s memory.

“I’m very disappointed with where Roc-A-Fella went.  The brand is compromised and I never thought that could ever happen where Roc-A-Fella is just not relevant.”

To see everything start by Dame and Jay’s hands and end the same way, one would believe that he still harbors a grudge as the money outweighed everything and caused the separation. Now looking from the outside in, he is aware of the change in perception about Jigga.

“I can’t objectively have an opinion on him.  I’m hearing what people are saying and I just would have never thought that there would be a day where I would hear people are saying those things about him.  I just thought he was untouchable as a rapper.  To hear certain things, it’s kind of surprising.”

In regards to Dipset, Dame could only witness the Harlem group break up as his focus has been geared towards Jim Jones.

“I haven’t seen Cam in like 2, 3, 4 years.  I miss him.  I don’t like what’s going on with him and Jim.  He’s like my little brother, all of them.  I’m like 7 years older than him, so I wish I could advise him.  He’s always going to be my dude.  We all grew up together.”

The business is truly a test to every person’s character.  Some are consumed by the fame and forget their beginnings while others are pushed out of the equation.  The music industry is a leech that feeds on those that allow it to get close enough.
