For the first time ever, the U.S. Open will be without the top female player in the world this year. No. 1-ranked Serena Williams, 28, announced her withdrawal from the tournament, explaining that she’s still recovering from surgery to repair cuts on her right foot. “It is with much frustration and deep sadness that I am having to pull out of the U.S. Open,” the tournament’s three-time champion said in a statement released Friday by her publicist.
Williams was reportedly hurt by a broken glass at a restaurant while she was in Munich – shortly after winning her fourth Wimbledon singles title – last month and had surgery on July 15. The tennis superstar’s withdrawal also means she won’t team with older sister Venus to defend the doubles title they won in at the U.S. Open last year. Venus, who hasn’t competed on tour since Wimbledon because of a bothersome left knee, is expected to play singles at the tournament, which kicks off Aug. 30 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
It’s real life bloody matrimony-dom for Bill and Sookie:
True Blood stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer wed Saturday evening at a private residence in Malibu, Calif., UsMagazine.com has confirmed. Guests — many of them bearing gifts in purple boxes and with purple bows — included Elijah Wood and True Blood costar Carrie Preston with husband Michael Emerson (Lost). Paquin, 28, and Moyer, 40, exchanged their vows beneath a tent across the street from the beach.
The couple announced their engagement last August. Connecting over daily breakfasts at a West Hollywood cafe, they began dating a few months after filming first began in 2008 for HBO’s smash vampire series, now in its third season. On the show, Paquin (a 1994 Oscar-winner at age 11 for her role in The Piano) plays Sookie Stackhouse, the psychic, mortal lover to vampire Bill Compton (Moyer); their first kiss occurred onscreen.
Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino said he would transform some New York prisons into dormitories for welfare recipients,
At these dormitories, the people would work in state-sponsored jobs, get employment training and take lessons in “personal hygiene.”
Paladino, who is popular with many tea party activists, is competing for the Republican nomination with former U.S. Rep. Rick Lazio. The primary is Sept. 14. He first described the idea in June at a meeting of The Journal News of White Plains and spoke about it again this week with The Associated Press.
“Instead of handing out the welfare checks, we’ll teach people how to earn their check. We’ll teach them personal hygiene … the personal things they don’t get when they come from dysfunctional homes.”
Throughout his campaign, Paladino has said New York’s “Rich Menu” of social service benefits encourages illegal immigrants and needy people to live in the state. He has promised a 20 percent reduction in the state budget and a 10 percent income tax cut if elected.
New York receives a federal block grant to provide cash and other forms of welfare to very low income residents. Federal law already requires welfare recipients to do some form of work to receive benefits, but Paladino believes it is not an effective enough measure.
A 10 month old Chinese boy is making headlines after reportedly weighing 44 pounds, as much as an average 6-year-old child.
Baby Lei Lei has been nickinamed the “Michelin Baby” and is being tested in hospitals to see if his rapid weight gain is a medical issue.
The boy’s mother Cheng Qingyu says her son was a normal weight at birth but now is comparable to the size of a kindergarten student.
She proudly shows him off however and says that eating is his favorite hobby, telling the UK Daily Mail,
“No matter whatever he grabs, he unconsciously puts it in his mouth. ..His most favorite thing is to eat.”
A nightclub in Montreal, has specifically put a ban on overweight women, leaving a lot of club goers and partiers upset.
The invitation was posted last week on the Facebook page of Muzique, a posh nightclub on St. Laurent Blvd., and included the ban on “fat girls,” followed by the emoticon of a winking smiley face.
Although a Montreal nightclub is distancing itself from an invitation on its Facebook page that specified “NO FAT GIRLS ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!,” people familiar with the local party scene say clubs regularly, if not so overtly, discriminate based on looks all the time.
Club Owner Stefano Apostolakos:
“Everybody knows. Clubs are selective. A nightclub that wants to attract a certain kind of crowd will never openly turn people away based on weight, he said, but if people don’t fit in with the club’s look, a bouncer can still find some excuse to turn them away -whether it’s a long wait time, an expensive bottle service fee or claiming the club is at capacity,”
The party was to celebrate the birthday of one of the club’s partners on Saturday. The invitation was taken down on the weekend.
“When I saw it, I freaked out. I was livid,” said one plus-size woman who received the message as a member of Muzique’s Facebook group.
Speaking on condition that her name not be used, the woman said her weight has never stopped her from going out, but she won’t be visiting Muzique if it discriminates against people who are overweight.

Rapper Paul Wall spoke to Ozone Magazine two days ago (August 19,2010) about where Mike Jones has been. But before we get to what Paul had to say. A little background on the story might help
For a hot minute, Houston rapper Mike Jones was everywhere. Dude was gimmicky, repeating his name throughout songs and giving out his real cell number. But people overlooked that because he had a bonafied hit early on with “Still Tippin“, a collaboration with Slim Thug and Pall Wall.
At that time, Mike was with Michal “5000″ Watts at Swishahouse where he dropped the album ‘Who Is Mike Jones?‘. Seeing an opportunity to grab a bigger piece of the pie, Mike formed Ice Age Entertainment and dropped the mostly ignored album ‘The Voice‘.
In addition to waning popularity, Mike was running into trouble with other rappers locally in Houston. At the 2008 Ozone Awards, held in Houston, he got punched in the nose by Trae The Truth for referring to himself as the “President Of Houston”, even though he never repped the city according to Trae.
So when Ozone caught up with Pall Wall two days ago (August 19,2010) and asked him what the hell happened to Mike, he had a lot to say..
Seems, Mike wasn’t one of Paul’s favorite people and he let that be known.
“Ever since he left Swishahouse I haven’t really kept track of him. I really didn’t know him too well before he came to Swishahouse. I’d say he dug his own grave. He lied to a lot of people, he turned his back on a lot of people, and he burned a lot of bridges. I don’t want to kick a dog while he’s down and I don’t wanna just talk s*** about him, but I think a lot of people were happy when [Trae] punched him and knocked him out. But at the same time, a lot of people were mad at Trae too. It’s not like Mike Jones is the gangsta of the year, so in my opinion, you don’t really get points for beating up Mike Jones. Some people say it was a publicity stunt on Trae’s part, but I disagree with that totally because I know Trae and he doesn’t really do publicity stunts like that. If Trae feels disrespected, he’s going to address it. I think that’s what happened. If somebody disrespects you, [punching them] is not always the answer, but it’s definitely sometimes the answer. So I don’t feel like Trae was wrong in any form or fashion. Trae doesn’t do publicity stunts. But like I said, Mike Jones burned his bridge with a lot of people, so he probably had a knock out coming from somewhere at some time anyway. I’m positive of that.“
What do Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber have in common?
They’ve now all raised the ire of Bill O’Reilly.
A week after O’Reilly called Aniston “destructive to society” for playing a single mom in The Switch, he took aim Friday at Kardashian and Bieber, who recently posed together by the beach for an Elle magazine photo shoot.
Joking that Kardashian is “42,” (she’s 29) and that Bieber, 16, “looks like Ringo Starr,” the O’Reilly Factor host wondered if the The Graduate/”Mrs. Robinson” themed pics were appropriate.
“I think it’s gross,” Republican strategist Margaret Hoover said during the chat. “It’s a 16 year-old having an affair with a celebutante!”
Panelist Rebecca Diamond argued: “It’s every sixteen-year-old male’s dream to have pictures with Kim Kardashian.”
O’Reilly, 60, claimed that he wasn’t interested in sexy older women when he was Bieber’s age. “I wanted to be a baseball player [when I was 16],” he said. “I didn’t want to hang around with Kim Kardashian…I had a baseball bat and a bat and [a pair of] ice skates! That’s what I was doing.”
Suggesting a double standard at work, O’Reilly finally noted, “I will tell you this: If a 16-year-old girl was pictured with a 29-year-old man in any of that, he’d be in big trouble.“
