NAACP Endorses Legalization Of Marijuana

With the possibility of recreational marijuana becoming legal in California due to Prop 19, more endorsements have come out in support of its legalization.

The NAACP is the latest organization to offer support for the initiative.

The NAACP expressed support and “unconditional endorsement” for the initiative after considering recent study released by the Drug Policy Alliance, which found that Blacks are more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites.

The study also found that in 2008 African Americans and Latinos combined comprised less than 44% of the state’s population, but together constituted 56% of the people arrested in California for possessing marijuana.

48 Virginia Inmates Isolated For Not Cutting Their Hair

48 inmates in Virginia jails are being punished after authorities say they won’t comply with the state’s rules that requires hair to be kept above a shirt collar and prohibits beards.

The Associated Press previously reported in May that 10 Rastafarian inmates had been in segregation for more than 10 years for refusing to comply with the grooming policy, which calls for hair to be kept above the shirt collar and bans beards.

Now new numbers have been uncovered and show that 48 men are being isolated for the “crime.”

Of the inmates being segregated, 14 of them are Rastafarians who view their dreadlocks as a testament to their religion.

Kendall Gibson [pictured] was previously featured in an article by the press for his isolation which has kept him tucked away from general population for more than ten years.

Described as a “Rastafarian God” whose serving 47 years on robbery, abduction and gun charges, he tells the AP,

“People always ask how I can smile in a place so negative. Jah is my answer. Without Jah in my life I wouldn’t be able to handle it.”

A number of the people being segregated are believed to be Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Native Americans and others whose religious belief calls for them not to cut their hair.

The Department of Corrections says that the policy is necessary to prevent inmates from hiding contraband in their hair and to prevent them from quickly changing their appearance should they happen to escape.

Virginia is one of about a dozen states that require inmates to cut their hair and beard.

St. Louis Hospital May Have Exposed Over 1600 Patients To Hepatitis & HIV…

A Missouri Veterans hospital may have exposed over 1,600 patients to HIV and Hepatitis.

This happened when some dental technicians at John Cochran Veterans Administration Hospital washed their own tools, when they should have been sent to the hospitals sanitizing and sterilizing department.

This is due to the fact that the hand washing instruments only kills a certain amount of bacteria, but is ineffective in killing viruses like HIV and Hepatitis.   The hand washing method used by the technicians started in February 2009 and wasn’t discovered until March 2010.

Patients were given letters on Tuesday, which notified them that they might have been exposed to hepatitis and HIV.  The hospital has responded to the problem by setting up a special clinic for patients that might be at risk.

Doctors are also urging patients to receive blood tests and counseling.  It was not reported that any of the employees were punished for not following the sanitizing protocol.

Negligence at its finest…

$95K Reward For Suspect Responsible For Killing Two Tampa Police Officers

The family of the man who is accused of killing two Tampa police officers are begging for Dontae Morris to turn himself in, MyFoxTampaBay.com reported.

“We, the family of Dontae Morris send our condolences out to the family of both the slain officers, especially to the mother that is pregnant,” said John Anderson, the family’s pastor. “We wish her the very best of health.”

The family stood behind Anderson as he continued his statement.

“We stand together as a family in asking that Dontae be allowed to turn himself in safely and no harm will come to him,” said Anderson.

Tampa Police Officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab

Morris has been on the loose since Officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis were shot and killed after they stopped a car Morris was in at 2:15 a.m. ET Tuesday, MyFoxTampaBay.com reported.

Cortnee Brantley, a suspected person of interest who was taken into custody for questioning late Tuesday morning has been released, Police Chief Jane Castor confirmed to MyFoxTampa.

Brantley, who was reportedly driving the vehicle that Morris was in when it was pulled over by police, didn’t have a visible license plate on her car.

“We were able to get some information from her,” Castor said late Tuesday, according to MyFoxTampaBay. “I don’t know that I would define her as cooperative.”

Morris is believed to have been the passenger in Brantley’s car who, when the officers went to arrest him on an outstanding warrant, pulled the trigger.

Detectives have issued a warrant for Morris’ arrest on two counts of first degree murder and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

Tampa police and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office have been searching nonstop for Morris, 24, in and around the area of the shooting, as well as wherever they have gotten tips as to where Morris might be or have been.
