Rounding over 50 police officers to West Palm Beach, the long arm of the law is ready to protest an upcoming concert that will features names such as Nas and Damian Marley.
Known as The SunFest, which will run from April 28 through May 2, the event is known as one of the biggest to happen in that area.
With picket signs ready, the police aren’t actually protesting the show, but are looking to put their efforts against the city of West Palm Beach.
It was announced earlier this month that the city would be administering cutbacks and it was making an attempt to eliminate officer pay raises and reduce benefits. The protest will serve as the response to such a decision.
“The public thinks all we’re doing is asking for raises,” Lou Penque, a West Palm sergeant and union treasurer, told the Palm Beach Post. “We are more than willing to work with the city and they refuse to work with us.”
To counter the lack of authority that will be present, SunFest organizers have hired private security guards to ensure safety.
“I don’t think the public will appreciate it, and I hope (the police) rethink it,” West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel said. “We’ll have plenty of security. It’s always been a very safe event with very few incidents.”
With Nas and Damian Marley expected to perform on May 2, other acts include ZZ Top, Weezer, Sean Kingston and more.
The King’s back. Not that one. One of the legendary Kings Of R&B, Ron “Mr. Biggs” Isley has been released from prison after serving three years for tax evasion.
Speaking with comedian Steve Harvey, Isley said,
“I’m overjoyed to be home and to be able to do everything that I want to do. I’m in love with this record business and I’m in love with the fans and everything and I just couldn’t wait to get back to doing that.
I’m working on another album and this album is gonna mean so much. I’ve been thinking about it for 3 years and wondering what it was gone be like and what it was gonna be like to sing certain songs and wanting to sing certain songs and now I got that chance to do that.”
Mr. Biggs also spoke on how the stint behind the wall changed his life and his families.
“It changed me a whole lot. My wife was able to visit me like three days a week and my son so that was the great thing about it. It was a little 3-hour drive for her to come to the camp where I was and I was able to get through because of that. That 3 days was everything to me man.
[But I'm home now] The family is fine. My son is 3 years old and he’s with me everyday. Me and him boy, Little Ronald.”
Isley also used his time behind bars to speak with his fellow brothers on lockdown and performed for them as well. Explaining some of the realities of being locked down, he states,
“…Talking to young people and crying with them and people that were gonna be in there some years and that part really hurts. To see your people and all kinds of people… older people [locked up]. And they looked up to me and like my music and we talked about our career and it was just like that man. I was working at the chapel and I did gospel shows every week and that kept me up… I’m gone do a gospel album too.”
But before the gospel project, Ron Isley is working on a new album for Def Jam and promises that the new album will be something different.
“Some of the people that I’m working with on this album will be Lauryn Hill, T.I., Rick Ross and Burt Bacharach. The group is back and they were just waiting. I would like to also thank L.A. Reid and the staff at Def Jam and Fox Entertainment and Elise Murray.
Just all the people that were just waiting for me to come home and for putting this together and supporting everything I’m doing. I feel like I’m 18 again and starting a new career.”
Mr. Biggs will also be making his return starting Mother’s Day Weekend when he’ll hit the stage in Atlantic City on May 8th and at The Paradise Theatre in the Bronx, NY on May 9th.
While people sit and complain about how horrible their lives are and continue to drag their feet in despair, an average man from Missouri shows that there’s still hope.
Chris Shaw, 29, an everyday convenience store clerk recently won the Powerball jackpot and came forward on Thursday to claim his winnings of $258.5 million.
Purchasing the winning ticket on Wednesday from the store he works at, lottery officials are giving Shaw the option of receiving a lump around $125 million or gradually accumulate his funds within 30 installments.
Making the choice to take the lump sum will give the state $6 million in state income taxes.
It’s always humorous how America works and the fact that a person can be gutted so heavily with taxation, even when they WIN something.
The store where he purchased the ticket, Break Time, will also get broken off a bit of bread as it will be the recipient of $50,000 for selling the ticket.
So there you have it folks. When you’re looking down that empty bottle of alcohol unaware of what’s next, remember the face of Chris Shaw. If he can hit the jackpot, it’s almost certain that it’s more than just a coincidence.
LaShawn Merritt, the Olympic runner who took home gold at the Beijing Olympics, has been suspended after testing positive for a banned substance found in penis enlargement pills.
Officials say the runner took ExtenZe, the “natural male enhancement pills”, that promise to increase a man’s penis size and width.
According to a release from the runner’s lawyer, the pills caused him to fail three consecutive tests from October 2009 to January 2010.
The substance in question is dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA, a type of steroids precursor found in the pills.
23-year-old Merritt says he hopes sponsors, family, friends and fans can forgive him for making a “foolish, immature and egotistical mistake.”
He also adds “Any penalty that I may receive for my action will not overshadow the embarrassment and humiliation that I feel inside.”
The CEO of United States Track & Field, the governing body of the sport, has since spoken out against Merritt saying he is “disgusted by this entire episode.”
He adds,“He has now put his entire career under a cloud and in the process made himself the object of jokes. In this day and age, a professional athlete should know better.”
The Father of pop star Britney Spears has banned her from leaving her Los Angeles home without a bra, The Sun reported Friday.
Father Jamie – who has legal control over all Spears’ affairs – fears his troubled daughter is getting close to the brink again and has imposed a host of new rules on the Womanizer singer.
He is embarrassed by constant pictures of her nipples popping out of her clothes and has insisted she only leaves her Los Angeles home wearing the correct support.
Jamie, 57, is taking the order so seriously he has even threatened to fire one of the 28-year-old’s security guards who has let her be photographed bra-less several times in recent weeks.
Jamie recently forced his daughter, who has two sons, to dump her 38-year-old boyfriend Jason Trawick because he was worried she was falling back into her emotional turmoil after years of recovery.
He feared their volatile relationship was sending fragile Britney close to the edge.
A friend revealed: “Jamie’s control over Britney’s life is incredible. He hates the pictures of her with her nipples all over the place so he has banned her from leaving the house without a bra.
“He wants her to put across the right impression.”
Wyclef Jean returned from Haiti yesterday (April 22) with three girls who will receive artificial limbs through his Yele Haiti Foundation according to AllHipHop.
The girls, two age 17 and one 8 years old are victims of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in January.
Wycelf’s foundation had come under some criticism from a few websites that claimed money donated wasn’t being used in the manner it was supposed to be.
But Wyclef continues to work tirelessly to help the people of his homeland as this proves.
